Season 2, Episode 14 – When You Know, You Know

Katie is talking to her therapist, the same one she had in flashbacks after Danny died. Katie says that before the panic attack last night, Michael and her grandfather were talking about Nora…and Amy. 

Michael and Amy talk outside the therapist’s office about why this is happening to Katie now. Amy says it makes sense with Nora leaving, to which Michael replies that Amy is responsible for the hack (that led to Nora leaving). Amy is disgusted by that comment. Michael says Katie agrees that it’s been chaos ever since the accident. At that moment, the therapist walks in and asks to have a session with Amy and Michael that evening. Their relationship is complicated, and that affects Katie. They agree to go. Later in the day, Michael changes his mind and says he won’t go to therapy with Amy because he already did the hard, emotional work and doesn’t need to do it again. However, after talking to Katie to on the phone, Michael again agrees to go therapy that night. 

Amy and Jake see each other in the hospital hallway and talk about how they missed each other that morning. He didn’t sleep at Amy’s last night because Katie was there after the panic attack. 

Sonya and TJ treat Julie for a stomach issue. Her long-distrance boyfriend is in town and refuses to leave the hospital, even though she wants him to. TJ gets to scrub in for Julie’s surgery. The surgeon tells TJ that Joan sees something in him, and she’s not easy to impress. 

Sonya and TJ continue to flirt throughout the episode. As they are wrapping up work for the day, TJ acknowledges that there’s something between him and Sonya. They go out for drinks. They start talking and realize that they’ve both seen concerning behavior from Joan. The hand shaking, dizzines, and absences are adding up. 

Amy runs into Rachel in radiology. She says she’s looking for Jake to sign some forms for Mia’s school. Later, Amy asks Jake if Rachel found him, and Jake has no idea what she’s talking about. He texts and calls Rachel, but she doesn’t reply. He goes to her house that evening, and she tells him that she found a lump, had a mammorgran, and needs a biopsy. As Rachel complains about her boyfriend pullling away since all this happened, Jake hugs her and tells her that he’s there for her. 

In flashbacks to five years ago, Amy and Gina tour Amy’s condo before she bought it. Gina can’t believe that Amy is going to leave Michael and wants to know what Joan said to her at dinner last week. We know from Season 2, Episode 12 that Amy and Joan’s dinner was on October 14, 2019, even before Amy was Chief. Gina says that Michael is her person and has been since they met him. She tells Amy to go home and fight for her marriage. Amy says it’s too late. 

In the next flashback to five years ago, Amy waits nervously for Michael after work. She sent Katie to a friend’s house and cooked dinner. Amy is doing what Gina said, fighting for her marriage, but Michael is hesitant. Next we see them towards the end of their dinner. Amy brings up a story about meeting Michael when he was a bartender at the bar she and Gina went to. Michael asks what their young selves would think of them. Amy thought she’d be running a medical department by now. Michael jokes that she had to settle for work-life balance after meeting the man of her dreams. Amy says she didn’t settle, but Michael was really the man of her dreams. He asks if Amy if really wants to try (to save their marriage). She says they should go upstairs… 

Throughout the episode, Amy sees memory flashes of affectionate texts with someone named Nate. We don’t know if it’s her phone or someone else’s. Then Amy has a memory of Katie coming to her the day after she and Michael had their night together five years ago. Katie took Michael’s phone while he was in the shower and read his texts with someone named Nate. Katie shows her the texts, and we finally understand the context of Amy’s memory flashes. Katie says she called the number, and a woman answered. Katie begs Amy to be nice to Michael so that the affair will stop. Katie says it’s only been three months, and the woman lives in Chicago. 

Michael is waiting impatiently at Katie’s therapist’s office, when Amy calls him after having the memory of his affair. Furious, she tells him that she knows he cheated on her and wants to know who the woman was. He says it was Nora. Amy is dumbfounded.
