Season 1, Episode 8 – Man Plans

Amy and Jake are standing outside a coffee shop, talking about whether her medical board results have come in. We get a glimpse of Amy’s emails on her phone: October 12, 2024 is when she was emailing someone (i.e. Richard) about Dixon. Her accident was the next day, so it must have been October 13, 2024.

Michael drives by the coffee shop and sees them kiss. He looks completely shocked. Later that morning, Michael confronts Jake about his relationship with Amy, saying that it’s inappropriate because he’s her superior and assessing her performance. He accuses Jake of putting Amy’s reputation at risk when she’s already under intense scrutiny. Jake doesn’t fight back, nor does he tell Michael that he and Amy were together before the accident because he doesn’t think it’s his place to share that. 

Jake and Amy meet in a patient room, where he tells her that Michael confronted him about their relationship. She’s pissed off that Michael went to Jake first. Jake tells Amy that Michael isn’t wrong about the conflict of interest and risk to her reputation. He says he’s loved her for a long time and will do whatever it takes to be with her in the long run, even if it means he has to go to another hospital. This seems like the first time Amy has heard that Jake loves her. She doesn’t yet remember him saying it before the accident. 

Immediately after talking to Jake, Amy confronts Michael. He tells her that it’s a bad decision to start an office fling. She tells him that her relationship with Jake was going on long before the accident and is something real. It’s a contentious conversation. 

In flashbacks, we see Amy and Richard eating lunch in the hospital, talking about how Lucas and Katie would be a cute couple someday. Michael calls to tell Amy that Danny died on the museum field trip. Still in flashbacks, we see Amy harshly correct something that Richard did wrong with a patient. She refuses to apologize and tells Richard that she threw her hat in the ring for Chief. He says she never wanted that. She says she does now. 

Richard is in his office on the phone with Lucas, saying it’s only been a few days since he checked into the inpatient mental health facility, grounding this episode in time. At the end of the workday, Richard tells Amy that after their day of working together, he’s recommending that she be reinstated as a doctor as soon as she passes the medical boards. Amy is genuinely grateful to Richard and decides to be honset with him about her relationship with Jake. She says that they’ve been in a relationship for the past couple weeks, but were also together before the accident. Richard tells her to talk to Jake, and they’ll make everything transparent with HR when they are ready. 

Amy tells Jake that Richard gave them his blessing, and they kiss. 

That night after work, Amy and Gina talk in Amy’s kitchen. Amy says she’s not sure if she and Jake are ready to have the whole hospital know about them and that Katie doesn’t even know. As Katie walks in to watch a movie with Amy and Gina, Amy looks at her phone and finds out that she passed the boards. 

At that moment, Michael knocks on Amy’s door. He tells her how hard things have been since the accident and that he doesn’t want to be the one to push them apart again. Amy tells him that she passed the boards, and he is thrilled for her. It’s bittersweet as they walk away from each other.
