What I'll Remember

The episode seems to take place shortly after Amy found out that she passed the boards, but all we know for sure is that it’s a few months after the accident.

In front of the whole internal medicine department, Michael announces that Amy has full doctor privileges again and presents her with a white doctor’s coat. Amy and Jake steal a moment. She asks him how she looks in the white coat, and he says next time that’s all she should wear.

In flashbacks, we see Amy on a plane with a toddler-aged Katie. Amy is pregnant with Danny and ends up treating TJ for altitude sickness aka “the bends” on the plane. This is the backstory of Amy and TJ’s relationship. While TJ and Amy are talking on the plan, he tells her that he wants to join the Army and then become a cop like his parents. In a hospital room after the plane lands, Amy meets TJ’s parents. TJ’s mom tells Amy that her son is alive because of her.

In the present, Amy treats TJ’s dad who is losing feeling in his legs. Amy and TJ disagree about the right course of treatment. TJ’s dad goes with Amy’s recommendation, even though it’s much more risky. He doesn’t get better, and in fact his health declines rapidly. At this point, it seems like Amy made the wrong diagnosis. TJ is angry and lashes out at Amy, saying that she always wants to play the hero and hasn’t changed since the accident. Amy is very confused and upset.

Amy asks Dr Franco if she remembers anything about Bill Dixon. Dr Franco says that Richard asked about him a few months ago. She says everything seemed normal with his autopsy, except she was surprised to find a specific medication in his system (a beta blocker). Back then, Richard told her that it was fine. He said he just forgot to update the chart.

Amy then asks Liz about the code that caused Bill Dixon’s death. Liz confirms that it was three months ago. Amy specifically asks her if there was anything unusual about the code. Liz is cagey about what happened. All she says is that Richard is the one who reached into the crash cart because she wasn’t working quickly enough. Liz says that it’s only Amy’s second day back as a doctor, so maybe she shouldn’t rock the boat.

Jake thanks Michael for paying his patient’s electric bill, and they have a nice moment of mutual respect. Michael tells Jake that all he ever wanted was for Amy to be happy.

With the information from Dr Franco and Liz, Amy figures out that Richard killed Bill Dixon. She waits until everyone leave and confronts him in his office (Amy’s former office). Rather than admit what he did, Richard takes advantage of Amy’s memory loss and tells her that she’s the one who killed Bill Dixon and he’s been trying to cover for her. He says she was always so overwhelmed and didn’t trust anyone to help her. Amy is very upset and doesn’t know what to believe.

She runs to the elevator in tears, overcome with the Bill Dixon situation and the fact that TJ won’t talk to her due to his father’s worsening condition. Michael is in the elevator. She can’t hide her tears from him. He hugs her and is clearly happy to be the one she ran to. They kiss.
