What I'll Remember
Amy leaves a message for Jake, referencing the many unreturned texts and message she already sent. She tells him that what he saw between her and Michael in his office is not what it looked like. She mentions that he took yesterday off, so this must be two days after the Season 1 finale. Next, Amy leaves Gina a message. She apologizes for not being there for her after her patient caused the train tragedy. Next, she calls Sonya, but we don’t hear the contents of the message. Amy seems to be on an apology tour.
Amy sees Jake at work and reiterates that what he saw in Michael’s office isn’t what it looked like. She’s surprised to learn that he heard about the confrontation between Amy and Nora (from Sonya, but Amy doesn’t know that). Amy says that after everything happened with TJ’s dad and Richard made her think she killed Bill Dixon, she was upset and ended up with Michael by accident..and they kissed. Jake says that Michael is still Amy’s “home” and that he misses the woman he fell in love with.
Nora checks into the hospital after her water breaks seven weeks early. Amy goes down to the OB floor to talk to him about a patient and is faced with the harsh reality that Michael is really having a baby with another woman. At the end of the episode, Nora has the baby and he’s healthy.
Amy and TJ treat Rosie, a patient with a degenerative heart condition who needs a transplant. In a flashback to six years ago, Amy convinces Rosie’s father that Rosie shouldn’t get a transplant yet because the risk outweighs the benefit. In the present, Gina explains to Jake that Amy discouraged the transplant back then because after Danny died, she always advised caution to parents, even when it wasn’t the right thing to do. This complements what Richard said in Season 1, Episode 4. He told Amy that after Danny died, the easiest answer was never good enough. She started overtesting and looking for the most esoteric diagnosis, and it wasn’t good for her patients.
Now in the present, he blames Amy for his daughter’s critical condition and is very angry at her. As a cop who is desperate to save his daughter, he uses his gun to hold the floor hostage until his daughter gets a transplant. He elbows Jake in the head and shoots TJ, who almost doesn’t survive.
Jake is sent to get a donor heart from Eastside. When they see his head injury and realize something is off, he acts like everything is fine and tells them call the CMO (Michael) directly. Michael is convincing enough that they release the donor heart to Jake. The hostage crisis ends when Amy ultimately convinces Rosie’s father than a transplant isn’t going to work. Michael ultimately gets blamed for lying to UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) because he didn’t tell Eastside about the hostage situation when they called him.
While talking to Rosie’s father, Amy mentions that TJ’s parents were both cops, tying back to a discussion between young TJ and Amy in Season 1, Episode 9.
Jake says that the issues with Amy and Rosie’s father started before he got to the hospital, so we know he wasn’t there six years ago, but he was there five years ago, so he probably got there in mid-2019.
While they are being held hostage, Julie and Amy have a moment where see how much they genuinely care about each other. Julie tells Amy that she misses the old badass Amy. That’s the second person in this episode who says they miss the old Amy.
In this episode, Amy gets her first real memory from the eight years she lost, triggered by the trauma of being held at gunpoint and seeing Rosie and her father again. She remembers arguing with Rosie’s cardiologist. With that one memory, Amy knows that more memory recovery is possible. She asks Gina to help her get more memories.
